This is an introductory article about diabetes. It contains a few basic facts to get you started on your journey of understanding your condition. Over time, we will add more in-depth articles and resources to help you manage your health better.
Introduction
Diabetes is a condition where your body has trouble using the food you eat to make energy. When you eat, your body breaks down the food into a sugar called glucose. Glucose is like fuel for your body. But in diabetes, your body has a problem with a special hormone called insulin. Insulin helps your body use the glucose and turn it into energy.
Imagine that the cells in your body are like little houses, and glucose (sugar) is the energy that they need to work properly. Insulin is like a special key that helps the glucose get into the houses. It unlocks the door and lets the glucose inside so that the cells can use it for energy.
Three main types of diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin, so there aren’t enough keys to unlock the doors. It’s like trying to open a door with a key that doesn’t fit – the glucose can’t get into the cells, and they don’t have enough energy to work properly.
In type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin, but the keys don’t work very well. It’s like having a lock that’s a little rusty and doesn’t turn easily. The insulin can’t unlock the doors as effectively, so the glucose has a hard time getting into the cells to provide energy.
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy in mothers that are not diabetic already. Managing your blood sugar during pregnancy can help to ensure you have a healthy baby!
These are at the time of writing this article only these two types of diabetes that are officially recognized, but there are more kinds that are still being researched, such as:
- Type 3
- Type 3c
- MODY
- Neonatal
- Wolfram
The list above are not exhaustive, but are considered part of the diabetes condition. We will discuss more of these over time.
Eating healthily and taking care of yourself
When you have diabetes, it’s important to take care of yourself by eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise, and taking any medicine or insulin that your doctor prescribes. By doing these things, you can help keep your body healthy and manage your diabetes.
By taking insulin or other medicines, people with diabetes can help their bodies get the energy they need to stay healthy. They also need to eat healthy foods and exercise to make sure their bodies can use the energy from the food they eat.
